If I recently consumed hemp foods, could I fail a drug test?

If the only source of the psychoactive THC in your body is from hemp foods, produced from Canadian grown hemp seeds and eaten in reasonable quantities, it is virtually impossible to fail a drug test by ingesting hemp foods due to the fact that THC levels in our products are barely measurable.

The TestPledge program is a voluntary commitment by the North American hemp food industry to limit THC concentrations to levels where they cannot result in positive drug tests. Here is an e-mail received about Nutiva Organic Hemp Protein powder and drug testing from a Department of Defense employee:

I work for the Department of Defense and was finally selected for random urinalysis after 18 years. I wasn’t the least bit worried – until that night when I went home to fix a fruit shake in which I use your hemp protein powder. As I took it out of the refrigerator, it suddenly occurred to me that it has a very small amount of THC in it. Having been a drug/alcohol abuse officer in the Air Force years ago, I understood the potential implications, including the fact that THC is detectable far longer than many drugs of abuse. I called Nutiva the next day, and was told that because you can’t ever know what other behaviors a customer may be engaging in, you cannot say for certain that your products could not cause a positive urinalysis for THC. However, I was assured that it was HIGHLY unlikely by itself – especially the protein powder because of the way it’s processed (i.e. lower oil content than some other products). I promised to provide you with feedback either way my test turned out. My understanding is that the Department of Defense uses state-of-the-art testing. I passed, despite using your hemp protein powder multiple times every week for months. I know it’s no guarantee, but it may relieve others who are not using illegal substances but who may be using your products, and become concerned about drug testing. Thanks.

HEMP Seed Nutrition

Hemp has been cultivated and used by many ancient cultures since the beginning of recorded history. Researchers have found its use in China, India, Babylonia, Persia, Egypt, and the native cultures in North & South America. Hemp fiber was used to make rope and cloth, while the stalk was used to make paper. These cultures also used the seed for nutritional purposes. It can be eaten as shelled seeds, oil, butter, flour, and protein powder. Hemp contains 40% fiber, which is the highest of all commercial flower grains.

Not only is hemp seed extremely versatile for the production of food, but it is the most nutritious food in the world. The nutrients derived from hemp seeds include fats, minerals and amino acids (protein).

There are eight amino acids human body cannot synthesize and two more the body cannot synthesize in sufficient quantity, that are essential to life. A diet without any one of them will eventually cause disease and death. These essential amino acids, along with eleven others the body can make from them, are chained together in accordance to genetic guidelines, via RNA formats from DNA blueprints, into structural proteins that give body to life, and into enzymes (globular proteins) that carry out the mechanics of living.

Hemp is not alone in containing all the essential amino acids in its embryonic seed. Flax seeds also contain all the essential amino acids as do many other seeds in the plant kingdom. What is unique about hemp seed protein is that 65% of it is globulin edistin. That is the highest in the plant kingdom. The very high density of nutrients per calorie make hemp a good choice if your goal is quick weight loss.

Globulins are one of seven classes of simple proteins. Simple proteins are made from amino acids and contain no non-protein substances. Globulins are in seeds and animal blood. Edistins are found in seeds; serum globulin is in blood. Edistins are plant globulins. And globulins along with albumins are classified as globular proteins. All enzymes, antibodies, many hormones, hemoglobin and fibrogin (the body converts fibrogin into non-soluble, fibrin, a blood clotting agent) are globular proteins. They perform the main work of living. The most beneficial way to insure the body has enough amino acid material to make the globulins is to eat foods high in globulin proteins.

Since hemp seed protein is 65% globulin edistin, and also includes albumin, its protein is readily available in a form quite similar to that found in blood plasma. Eating hemp seeds gives the body all the essential amino acids required to maintain health, and provides the necessary kinds and amounts of amino acids the body needs to make human serum albumin and serum globulins like the immune enhancing gamma globulins. Eating hemp seeds could aid, people suffering from immune deficiency diseases.

Consumption has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. A 10-year study was performed by Harvard Medical School with over 75,000 women.

Researchers found that women who eat about 2.5 servings of whole-grain foods (like brown rice) daily may reduce their risk of heart disease by more than 30% compared to those who eat virtually no whole-grain foods. Cashews contain a high level of selenium (as do sunflowers). Studies have proved that “selenium can lift the spirits.” Those who consume cashews and other foods rich in selenium reported feeling significantly more clearheaded and in a better mood than they did before consumption. These antioxidant-rich seeds are great sources of vitamin E and omega-3s, essential fatty acids that make skin glow and hair shine. “In a preliminary study from the University of Toronto, researchers fed 21 diabetics either a supplement made from chia or grains with similar fiber content. After 3 months, blood pressure in patients taking chia dropped (10 points diastolic, 5 points systolic) while the grain group’s BP remained steady.”

COCONUT OIL

Coconut oil has been described as “the healthiest oil on earth.” That’s quite a remarkable statement. What makes coconut oil so good? What makes it different from all other oils, especially other saturated fats? Once mistakenly believed to be unhealthy because of its high saturated fat content, it is now known that the fat in coconut oil is a unique and different from most all other fats and possesses many health giving properties. CRANBERRY

Cranberries are an under appreciated fruit. Flax seed contains many nutritional components. They include fiber and ligands, which inhibit cancer, such as breast cancer. Prunes are dried plums, rich in minerals and phenols, plus they have an extremely high ORAC value. The drying process actually increases antioxidant powers by more than six times! USDA researchers believe that people of all ages can prevent and treat diseases of aging by simply adding prunes to their diets. Prunes are especially appropriate for: Boosting bone density, bowel cleansing, regularity, cardiovascular disease, liver cleansing, preventing memory loss and Alzheimer’s, and fighting infections.

QUINOA Chenopodium quinoa Willd.

“Quinoa is one of the world’s most perfect foods. TEFF

Teff is an ancient and intriguing grain, tiny in size yet packed with nutrition. Teff is native to Ethiopia where it accounts for one quarter of the total cereal production. Teff is packed with nutrition. It is higher in protein than wheat and has a high concentration of a wide variety of nutrients, including calcium, thiamin and iron. The iron from teff is easily absorbed by the body. Since the grains are so small, the bulk of the grain is germ and brand. It is very high in fiber and is thought to benefit people with diabetes as it helps control blood sugar levels. What are the benefits of Hemp fabric for dog beds?

Hemp stretches less then any other natural fibers, gets softer with use and is porous by nature and breathes, thereby making it cool in warm weather and warmer in cool weather when your dog is laying on our beds!

Via the North American Industrial Hemp Council & the European Industrial Hemp Association:

• Hemp fibers are longer, stronger, more absorbent and more mildew-resistant than cotton.
• Fabrics made of at least one-half hemp block the sun’s UV rays more effectively than other fabrics.
• Hemp grows well in a variety of climates and soil types. It is naturally resistant to most pests, precluding the need for pesticides. It grows tightly spaced, out-competing any weeds, so herbicides are not necessary. It also leaves a weed-free field for a following crop.
• Hemp can displace cotton which is usually grown with massive amounts of chemicals harmful to people and the environment. 50% of all the world’s pesticides are sprayed on cotton.
• Hemp can displace wood fiber and save forests for watershed, wildlife habitat, recreation and oxygen production, carbon sequestration (reduces global warming), and other values.
• Hemp can yield 3-8 dry tons of fiber per acre. This is four times what an average forest can yield.
• Hemp is an extremely fast growing crop, producing more fiber yield per acre than any other source. Hemp can produce 250% more fiber than cotton using the same amount of land.

Better Buddies, Inc. was not yet an idea when we found ourselves buying pet products for our own furballs at home. There is so much confusion about hemp and marijuana.  Many people think they are the same thing.  Hemp is misunderstood because it looks like its cousin, marijuana.  Hopefully the follow info compiled will help straighten it out for you or people you know.

1.  The THC (active ingredient of marijuana) levels in Industrial Hemp are so low that no one could get high from smoking it. Industrial hemp has a THC content of between 0.05 and 1%. Marijuana has a THC content of 3% to 20%. Hemp is to marijuana as a miniature poodle is to a St. Bernard!

2. Hemp is not legal to grow in the U.S. under Federal law because of its unjustified relation to marijuana, and it is considered a controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act.

3.  Some states have defied Federal law and made the cultivation of industrial hemp legal. These states — North Dakota, Hawaii, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Montana, West Virginia, Oregon and Vermont — have not yet begun to grow hemp because of resistance from the federal Drug Enforcement Administration.

HISTORY:

 4.  Hemp is the oldest cultivated fiber plant in the world. From more than 1,000 years before the time of Christ until 1883 A.D., hemp was our planet’s largest agricultural crop and most important industry, involving thousands of products and enterprises; producing the overall majority of Earth’s fiber, fabric, lighting oil, paper, incense and medicines. In addition, it was a primary source of essential food oil and protein for humans and animals.

5.  The Constitution of the United States was written on hemp paper. The Declaration of Independence (June 28, 1776) was written on hemp paper.  In 1776 Betsy Ross made the first American flag of hemp cloth. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson grew hemp on their plantations.

6. The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 effectively made the cultivation of hemp illegal, due largely to corporate greed and the efforts of businessmen Andrew Mellon, William Randolph Hearst and the DuPont family.

7. In 1942, The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), in contradiction to the Marijuana Tax Act, produced and distributed a motion picture called “Hemp for Victory” in which the federal government not only promoted the many uses of cannabis hemp, but also detailed the most efficient cultivation and harvesting methods.

THE ENVIRONMENT and SUSTAINABILITY:

 8.  Hemp is biomass champion, breathing in more carbon dioxide (the most abundant greenhouse gas) than any other plant-approx. 3 times more than trees. Hemp scrubs the air of excess CO2 gas – a contributing factor in global warming – as it grows. It is capable of producing 10 tons per acre in four months.

9. Farming 6% of the continental U.S. acreage with hemp crops could provide all of America’s energy needs. One acre of hemp is capable of producing 1000 gallons of methanol and 500 gallons of gasoline. Hemp can produce 10 times more methanol than corn.

10.  Planting hemp actually restores nutrients to the soil.  Hemp was planted after the Chernoble nuclear disaster to clean the radioactive toxins left in the soil. The hemp plant’s deep taproot system prevents top soil erosion and aerates the soil.

 INDUSTRY, MANUFACTURING & AGRICULTURE:

11.  Almost any product that can be made from wood, cotton, or petroleum (including plastics) can be made from hemp and usually better than it’s made from now. There are more than 30,000 known uses for hemp.

12.  In 1941 Henry Ford built a plastic car made of fiber from hemp and wheat straw. Over two million cars on the road today, including some BMW’s, Mercedes, and Lotus, have hemp composite parts for door panels, dashboards, luggage racks, etc.

13.  Hemp plastic is biodegradable, synthetic plastic is not.

14. One acre of hemp with a 4 month growth cycle can produce as much usable fiber as 4 acres of trees with a 20 yr. growth cycle.

NUTRITION AND HEALTH:

15.  Hemp contains 25% – 31 % protein, second only to soy (35%), but the protein in hemp foods is more easily digestible. .  Hemp seed protein is unique from other seeds (including flax)  in that it contains all the amino acids and omega 3’s essential to life. The very high density of nutrients per  calorie make hemp a good choice if your goal is quick weight loss.

16.  Hemp seed is an excellent source of calcium and iron and are also a good source of phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, copper and manganese.

17.  Hemp seed is gluten free and consequently will not trigger symptoms of celiac disease.

Hemp oil has been shown to relieve the symptoms of eczema and have anti-inflammatory properties.

THE ECONOMY:

 18.  in 1938 Reader’s Digest and Popular Mechanics hailed hemp as the first billion-dollar crop. The article was the very first time in American history that the term “billion-dollar” (equivalent to $40-$80 billion now) was ever applied to any U.S. agricultural crop!

19.  In America alone, the hemp industry has grown from $5 million in 1990, to $50 million in 1995, to      about half a billion dollars in 2002 and has an estimated $500 billlion annual potential worldwide market today.

20.  Hemp grown for biomass could fuel a trillion-dollar per year energy industry, while improving air quality and distributing the wealth to rural areas and their surrounding communities, and away from centralized power monopolies.

21.  The United States is the #1 importer of hemp in the world. We can import it, manufacture with it and sell it, but our farmers are not allowed to grow it!
